Haydock Park Lunatic Asylum ......................

Started by: tonker (27963)

On 13th February, 1858, large type posters in the township proclaimed “Lunatic at Large”. A confirmed lunatic had escaped from the Haydock Lodge Asylum last Wednesday night. Keep on the lookout for him, he is very dangerous.

On 27th February the following report on the asylum appeared.
The Royal Albert Asylum for Idiots and Imbeciles in the North of England provides a Training School home for feeble minded youths, and is also a great boon to the idiotic and imbecile, and it is very gratifying to note that these humblest fragments of humanity are, in the true spirit of Christianity being tenderly cared for and not left hopeless.

My great great Aunt who lived in Marsh Green was sent to Lancaster Moor Asylum. In late 1800s She passed away in that institution. We thought that she may have been buried in Lancaster, but found out that her body was sent home to Wigan. Something that was only done if you had money. We had scoured graveyards in Lancaster looking for her.

The site will become a multi million pound housing development, but the building will undergo renovations. Money for this will come from the developers of the site.

I too like looking at 28Days Later, some brill photos of old Mills and such

If anyone needs anyone finding at the graveyard next to Lancaster Moor, let me know. I live a stones through away from that graveyard and can easily visit it on my way home from work one day.
